Secrets and lies clip

Media swede

link to the group blog SWEDE= a remake of a selection of scenes from a film, the remake is funnier than the original scene so more people watch it. these can also be made to promote a film. i like this swede because it is similar to the original film in many ways, the swede was well filmed and well propped. this made the film effective for me as it looked professionally made which makes the film easier to watch without closing the internet browser.

Children of men analysis

Scene 1: 32 seconds-54 seconds
Scene 2: 54 seconds- 1.32 minutes
Scene 3: 1.32 minutes- 1.48 minutes
Scene 4: 1.48 minutes-2.02 minutes
Scene 5 2.02 minutes- 2.28 minutes

Scene 1
In the first scene the sound starts ahead of the picture, this is effective because it makes the viewer’s pay attention. It does this as when the sound starts the viewer’s look at the screen however when there’s no picture they pay more attention to the sound as it’s the only thing playing.
The lighting and colour in the first scene is pure black, this draws the viewer’s attention to the sound.
There is no camera usage in the first scene as the screen is completely black.
Mise-en-scene is irrelevant in this scene for the reasons mentioned above.
Scene 2
In the second scene the sound is continued throughout, this is the TV broadcast, this has a continued affect as the viewer is still mainly focused on the voice as it’s still the most important effect that’s happened so far in the film.
The lighting and colour in this scene comes into effect as it is very bland, this fits in well to the current scene and the time period. The greyness of the scene tells me this is either a very sad moment n history or that we’re in the past, this also tells me that we’re in England because of the color of the sky in the background.
The use of the camera of this scene appears to be on a crane. This shows the full extent of the scene and the costumes, this is important because when watching we can determine the time period and the effect of the costumes. This also shows the main character walking through the crowd when we wouldn't be able to see him from most other angles, we know he is the main character because he is in the middle of the shot and he is the only one moving in the whole scene.
The background of this scene automatically tells me they’re in a coffee shop, this is obvious because of the wall saying café and the coffee machine at the back of the scene. This shows the setting of the scene as well as the costumes. The costumes help us to determine what country they’re in, for example the police man in the background is a classic English police man, you can tell this from the costume.
Scene 3
This scene is where the TV announcement ends, there is also crying in this scene so we can associate the crying with the child’s death to assume it’s important.
The lighting and colour in this scene is mostly the same as the last scene however as we get closer to the coffee shop window we can see more vibrant colours of the cars and busses driving past.
This scene demonstrates the use of a freehand camera. Meaning the camera is being carried without its dolly. This is effective as the freehand camera follows the main character outside the shop it makes the viewer feel that they are following him as you get the slight subtle movements as if we’re walking.
We get to see more of the setting in this scene as we move closer to the window of the shop, we can begin to see buildings and cars driving past and we get to see the TV broadcast which everyone is watching as we begin to leave the coffee shop.
Scene 4
In the fourth scene of the video we can hear the sounds of the streets and the horns an revving of the cars going past, this is effective because it works well with the camera in the way that we feel like we’re there a little bit more now we can hear the background.
The lighting and colour of this scene get a little brighter as we step out into the daylight. This changes the lighting rapidly as it’s more natural light and the cars driving past give some more vibrant colours as well.
The use of the camera as it pans round slowly when we leave the café is really effective for me as it shows the background and setting of the scene in much more detail. Here we can see the height of the buildings and population of the cars, which creates more of a London feel.
The main character leaves the middle of the frame in this scene as we pan round to see the setting of the scene and where we are.
Scene 5
In the final scene the cars continue to fill the atmosphere of sound until we hear the explosion. The explosion is extremely effective as it is unexpected. This effect is even more emphasized as throughout the film so far everything has been really calm and quiet until the explosion goes off near the main character.
The lighting and colour in this scene remains the same until the fire of the explosion goes off in the background. This also emphasizes the explosion as this is the first splash of bright colour we've seen so far in the opening of the film.
The use of the camera in this scene almost the same until we pan round to see the main point of interest, the explosion, this I shown by the camera because this is an important part of the opening scenes.

In the last few seconds of the scene a women walks out of the exploded building with only one arm this already warns the viewers that this film is graphic and violent. As well as this there is screaming from inside the building.

Camera Movements

So for this section instead of using scenes from the same video i just searched online for examples of each camera movement.Hopefully this is in enough detail.
PAN: The pan movement to me is a moving point of interest witch is followed by the camera to highlight what the p.o.i is, also gives a full view of the p.o.i and the speed and the way it moves, this can be used to portray emotion in how fast it's moving and the way it's moving. The background and scenery can also play a big part in this particular movement as it shows more than just one angle of the scenery as it can go up to a maximum of a 360 degree view.
Tracking shot: In my opinion this shot is used when showing facial expressions at a close range. Could also be used to show specific lighting views such as when the lighting is used to highlight the p.o.i. this shot is mainly used for facial expression and a larger view of the p.o.i, when highlighting facial expressions this can be used to define the mood of the character/object.
Tilt: Personally i think tilt is used to show a characters full body language and facial expression or to create suspense. suspense is created when the camera tilts but does not show the actual p.o.i till the very last moment for example in a crime show when you suspect someone but when the camera tilts it reveals the face last to create a line of suspense as to who it was. the tilt can also show of lighting and a different perspective of the scenery in the background.
Pull focus: I think pull focus is used to highlight two separate p.o.i's. two characters but at a different time in the same scene which allows you to focus on both characters expressions both bodily and facially at a different time so you can see bot instead of just one.
Crane: Crane is used to show a sky view of the scene this is good for showing the layout of the scene and also to show something specific that you can't normally see from a different angle so the crane is used to show it from another angle.could also show some feeling as to the tension of the scene and how each character reacts.
Aerial: a vertical angle on the scene which shows the scene from a different angle. this angle shows the layout and the views you wouldn't be able to use when looking at a straight focus on the scene.
Whip pan: Shows a quick glance at the scene. this angle wouldn't be used to highlight a p.o.i as the camera moves to fast to capture anything important.can also be used when trying to focus on peoples facial expressions within a short time frame making the viewer quickly inter prate a quick analysis of what the character is thinking or planning.
Handheld: Can be used to create tension between the scene and viewer for example when used in horror films to show the characters movement from an eyesight view. This can show the viewer what he character is feeling for example when the camera is shaking rapidly we know the character is heavily breathing which can show he/she is scared or out of breath.

Framing and camera shots

The following pictures were all taken from the same youtube video with neal patrick harris and the TONY awards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne2KoHAaE8A
Picture 1:Extreme close-up (able to see facial expressions clearer this allows the scene to be more clear and sometimes more tense, also allows you to be able to see the makeup and hair in more detail to in someways credit the artist who styled it.)
Picture 2:Big close-up (In slight difference to the extreme close-up it shows off the costume a little more and allows you to see more of the background)
Picture 3:Close-up (This shot shows of alot more of the costume and make it easier to see the body language the person is using as well as a clear shot of the facial expression, so it can show both body language and facial expression to really convey what the actor/person is feeling)

Picture 4:Mid shot (In slight difference to the close-up the mid shot shows more of the back groundm, props and costume. This shot focuses more on the body language and less on the upper features of the actor.)
Picture 5:Mid long shot (A more zoomed out shot more of the back ground of the scene.)
Picture 6:Long shot (Shows the actors full body language and the full stage, In the shot you can clearly see the lighting and what it's pointing out, in this photo the lighting is focusing on the main singer.)
Picture 7:Extreme long shot (Shows the full lighting and stage, enables you to see the main focus of the lighting)
Picture 8:Worm's eye view (Shows off more of the audiences view of the show)
Picture 9:Bird's eye view (allows you to see the whole stage and part of the audience, in this shot it shows the lighting clearly and focuses on a smaller point of interest.)
Picture 10:Aerial view (Shows the lighting from a different perspective and the layout of the scene.)
